So, you found your perfect bridal gown. It is exactly what you always dreamed of and you cannot wait to walk down the aisle in it. But now comes the next task in bridal fashion… alterations. In the bridal world, we all know that sizing can be a bit odd and certain areas of the dress can fit your body better than others. Therefore, it is so important to alter the gown to best accent your body’s assets and de-emphasize areas you may rather have hidden. Although this is a necessary process to purchasing your wedding dress, some brides can become overwhelmed with the entire ordeal. So here are four objectives we have compiled to best help you prepare for this stage and get the most out of it while you can:

1.  Keep your timeline in mind.

In case you are new to the world of bridal alterations, there are typically two to three fittings over the course of about nine to twelve months after ordering your dress. Because it takes around five months for the dress itself to even get from the designer to the shop, it is important to take the proper amount of time to be ready for your wedding day. You will have your first fitting three to four months prior to your wedding, and either one or two more before you finally actually take your dress home. The purpose of these bridal alterations is to ensure that you are getting the best possible fit for you on your big day. Just remember, perfection takes time, so prepare accordingly!

2.  Maintain your weight.

Although you may want to slim down for your wedding day, it is also extremely important to maintain the same weight beginning at your first fitting. Whether you are trying to gain some curves or get a bit more trim, it will save you some financial hardship in the end if you keep a consistent figure for the remainder of your fitting journey. However, between the months of purchasing your gown and your first fitting, you are more than welcome to lose whatever you would like to, as it is always easier to take in the dress than add a few inches.

3.  Do not forget that customization adds up.

As with most bridal alterations, the more you customize your gown, the more expensive the cost will be. Here at Gown Boutique of Charleston, we stick to a flat rate of $390.00 for basic alterations (fitting appointments; bodice, waist and hips adjustments; hemming; bustling; and hand pressing of your gown and veil), but specific fixes additional alterations will cost extra. Of course, we want to keep your vision in mind the entire time, but try to keep track of these costs as to avoid sticker shock at the end of your experience!

4.  Remember, this is supposed to be fun!

This is all for your wedding day, so it should be one of the happiest days of your life. Of course, this is a large purchase and one you will remember forever, but just try to relax and enjoy the ride as much as possible. In the long run, just trust that your bridal alterations team will take care of you, and stay as calm as possible.
